my little red riding mac

I've won, I've won!!! No unfortunately not some major competition, but, but, but, a fab-u-lous red Burberry riding mac on ebay, and for a rock bottom price too.

I was tipped off by a friend (I owe you one!!) who'd read one of my earlier posts about coveting a red riding mac, and as if by magic, Mr Benn style, one duly appeared in my size. I went from ebay virgin to addict in a couple of adrenalized bidding hours.

It's secondhand but in perfect condition, and has legstraps and a vent at the back so it sits neatly over the saddle. The only drawback is, I love it so much, I don't want to risk getting any mud on it!

So my advice is-don't be afraid to be a secondhand rose.

Got any good tips for cleaning riding macs?

  1. Flicka Congratulations on your win!! It looks amazing, very stylish and even better if you got it for a good price! It's all too easy to not bother about what you wear when playing with your ponies. I'm off to have a little search on eBay.

  5. I've seen your post and had to comment. The traditional mackintosh is such a specialist and rare item I was amazed to find some one out there who actually coveted owning one, I really thought I was an army of one!! You mention the new Mackintosh Store in Mayfair in an earlier post. I went to see what all the fuss was about just after it opened, after all it's only a rubber raincoat we are talking about. I was shown around by a rather snooty French lady (the store manager)who told me there was nothing in my size (I'm only a 14!!)but they were waiting for the"larger" sizes to come in. The prices were stratospheric starting at £615 yes £615 going up to nearly £1000. As I could not secure a Mortgage and there was nothing in my size, I too started looking on Ebay and low and behold I didn't have to wait long before the Mac(s) of my dreams appeared.
I forgot to explain, I was looking for a Fashion Mac (hence the visit to Mackintosh) and if I could find one a Riding Mac.
My search was rewarded and now I am the proud wearer of a fantastic Trench Mac with all those fabulous Military Features in Traditional Putty color with yellow lining. The classic riding mac a fantastic yellow with Putty lining. Both these wonderful practical and dare I say it sexy macs cost me less than £150!!!
But yes flicka they need care and are a nightmare to keep clean, but it's well worth the effort for all those head turning looks I get every time I wear them. Why o why did this lovely fashion item become extinct on the high street, any thoughts?

  6. Thanks for your comment-now we are an army of two-we must go forth and multiply!! And you can stick two fingers up to the woman in the Mackintosh store as you sashay stylishly by in your new purchase! I can't stand that sort of attitude-she can leave it in Paris where it's definitely the rule that you can never be too thin :(

  7. The "army" is growing. My sister is now the proud owner of beautiful mackintosh bought in the sale at Rainmac in Midhurst. Currently selling off their remaining stock at a third of the original price!!
By the way I did get a follow up email from the Mackintosh Store informing me that they had received new stock and there were now a couple of macs in my size! My email in reply was very polite but pointed that they were not the only "game in town".

  8. Cool! E-bay is a great source where you can find designer clothes at good prices. Burberry has so many nice outfits, it's crazy. I love their collection.

  9. DO beware of the rather "fashionista" Mackintosh shop in Mayfair... the company is obviously into some serious "market manipulation" and sooner or later will come unstuck. They are trying to "reinvent" themselves as Burberry did some years ago; the obvious difference is that Burberry has been a major player for much longer (at least in recent years) and is coming at the market from a solid position.

If you want pukka riding macs, always try Gekko or Weathervain (excellent websites for both), and great people to deal with... Also, no shortage of other styles, and unless you want something that looks like 1960s wallpaper, you'll be quids in!!

  10. Thanks for the links-I love the Devon and Suffolk styles and they offer a good choice of colours. It's definitely confirmed what I hinted at in an earlier post; I am a secret dominatrix lol

  11. We love those styles Flicka, but its the price, nearly £500!!!
When the Riding Mackintosh was the norm it was a something worn on the ground as well as on a horse by large numbers of the population, in fact at a wet show in the 50's and 60's is was standard issue! Waxed coats became the norm in the later decades and today the Polyester "bin bag" (have you ever seen anything less stylish) macs from Jack Murphy seem to be the norm.
Mackintosh claim that they have held onto tradition and continue to manufacture in Scotland using trained craftsmen etc etc we all understand the sales pitch. But at the end of the day, this limits supply and keeps the price up. I say move manufacture of the traditional mackintosh off shore and relaunch at a sensible price that may persuade the "polyester brigade" to invest in a fashion icon that adds back a bit of style and glamour even when riding in the rain.

  12. A totally (I hope!!) objective, and unsniping aside...

I was at secondary school in the '70s, and remember a sort of large Millets / Blacks-type outdoor/camping kit place, just by the bus stands next (London) Victoria station.

Price of a bog-standard riding mac in those days?? Fifteen quid! But compared with my pocket money (which was quite generous), it was way out of my range. For further comparison, I bought my one and only Burberry trenchcoat in the 1979 January sale - ninety-nine quid!! Look at their prices as of late...

Put simply, a genuine mac (if you want it fully waterproof, (which I imagine is a major plus), hand-finished with taped seams... this is NOT something dreamt up by the ad-men, it's a fact of the rag trade. Would we want to go back to average 1970s salaries?? I think not...

I should like to add that I have NO connection with any rainwear establishments mentioned in this post, or previous ones (only as a customer). Like Flicka, I just appreciate great classic style!!
